Michel Leclerget was sitting in the back of a grey Citroen. The front wheel drove onto a bridge which crossed over the Southern Canal. A shower towards the end of the evening was lashing against the solitary bridge of a barge drawn alongside one of the banks. The youngest of the drivers dared to ask :
- Boss, when are we going to sleep?
- But you are already asleep, because this life is a nightmare!
- Michel, don't lay into this young lad!
The man who was shouting at Leclerget, was called Marcel Desvaillants. They had fought in Russia together during the winter of 1941. When they were drunk, they talked about the time when they had seen blocks of ice break away from the sun in the Smolensk suburbs !

Pat had poured his heart out when he had dropped off Attielski in front of the Chamonix station :
« Our mountains are suffering. The surfaces are caving in. They do not move to Chamonix to climb them, they come to show off. With every blow of the ice axe, they trample on the ice, they destroy the faces, they break the ridges. The mountains are in pain. They can no longer put up with our miasmas, our irritations like our illusions! Nicolas, do deserted valleys and unreachable summits exist ? »
For a second Nicolas regretted not having stayed at Chamonix, at this very moment in time, he would be on the Bionnassay ridge, up there, nobody cheated...

When Maria had left the orphanage, she hadn't paid attention to Siberia, to its forests, its rivers which were like estuaries, its lakes which were as vast as oceans... The « BAM » railway line crossed over the River Lena. This river, like most of the river's in Siberia, disappears off into the Arctic Ocean. Perhaps it drags along the broken rocks of the underground provinces from Agharti up to the shores of the « Synnakov » cost, the other Atlantis, the polar Atlantis? ... In Moscow nostalgia had set in, followed by the fear that the « 30 hour » Moscow days created.

Their convoy overtook the garbage trucks which were surprised by the screeching of the sirens. It was six thirty when they arrived in front of the basilica. In the centre of the tympan five warriors were lying down at the foot of a statue of Christ. What was Christ thinking that morning? Was he judging? Was he distraught? Maybe he had become indifferent to the murmurings of the Adriatic.
Attielski's assistant hummed :
- « How wonderful it is to see my commander before the attack... ! »

Central Europe was dreaming. In the morning at Katowice the travelers on the platform were doubtful: who was still going to Moscow by train?
A man was leaning on the corridor rail. His white hair was spread across the collar of his overcoat.
He spoke to Attielski :
- I ran away from a « Home-Papy ». They ruined my life. I won't let them rob me of my death ! ...

The platforms at the Krasnoiarsk station stretched out. Their ends tried to join up with those of the Vladivostok station more than five thousand kilometers away...
The armored train from the Trans-Siberian railway station suddenly slowed down, then the engines started up again; ready to release their power two kilometers away from the Taichet station...
When the raid got out of hand, hoards of machine guns shot at the « Rossia » compartments.
Then the train commanders sprung out of the six carriages of the armored train.
General Paltrewsky spoke to Attielski :
- You see, commander, victory does not belong to electronics, but to the foot soldier's bayonets which will go beyond the last one hundred meters ! ...
